Medicines Used in HIV Treatment (ART)

HIV is treated with Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), which uses a combination of medicines to control the virus.

1. Nucleoside/Nucleotide Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs)

These drugs block HIV from making copies of itself.

  • Tenofovir (TDF / TAF)

  • Lamivudine (3TC)

  • Emtricitabine (FTC)

  • Abacavir (ABC)

  • Zidovudine (AZT)

2. Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NNRTIs)

These also stop viral replication in a different way.

  • Efavirenz (EFV)

  • Nevirapine (NVP)

  • Rilpivirine (RPV)

  • Doravirine (DOR)

3. Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitors (INSTIs)

These are widely used today due to high effectiveness and fewer side effects.

  • Dolutegravir (DTG)

  • Bictegravir (BIC)

  • Raltegravir (RAL)

  • Cabotegravir (CAB)

4. Protease Inhibitors (PIs)

They prevent HIV from producing mature virus particles.

  • Lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r)

  • Atazanavir (ATV)

  • Darunavir (DRV)

5. Entry & Fusion Inhibitors

These stop HIV from entering healthy cells.

  • Maraviroc

  • Enfuvirtide

Combination HIV Medicines (Single Pills)

Many patients take one pill per day that combines multiple drugs, such as:

  • Tenofovir + Lamivudine + Dolutegravir (TLD)

  • Bictegravir + Emtricitabine + Tenofovir

  • Tenofovir + Emtricitabine + Efavirenz

Long-Acting HIV Injection Medicines

For maintenance therapy:

  • Cabotegravir + Rilpivirine injections
(Given monthly or every two months)

Important Notes

  • ❌ These medicines do not cure HIV

  • ✅ They control the virus and keep it undetectable

  • ⏳ Treatment is lifelong

  • 🩺 Never start or change HIV medicine without a doctor
